Fortuna Sittard

How Fortuna Sittard are set up for the 2026/27 Eredivisie season: squad movement, tactical approach and the questions that remain open.

Where they stand

  • 2026/27 Eredivisie, one match played: Fortuna Sittard drew 2-2 away at PSV on 8 August 2026 (Flamingo 55', Fernandez 74' for PSV; Romeny 42', Michut 90' for Fortuna). Underlying performance was one-sided in PSV's favour by volume — 76% possession, 21 shots, 2.65 xG against Fortuna's 24% possession, 8 shots, 0.71 xG — but Fortuna put 6 of their 8 shots on target and took a point from a stoppage-time equaliser. Table position is suppressed after a single match rather than shown.

In

  • Sven Simons from FC EindhovenPermanent transfer · Confirmed by the club · Eligibility not establishedMidfielder (22), permanent and free, three seasons effective 1 July 2026. Limburg-born (Roggel), PSV academy, professional debut with FC Eindhoven in 2023, 105 official FC Eindhoven appearances, 7 goals and 3 assists in 2025/26; previously a teammate of Jasper Dahlhaus in 2023/24. The first arrival of the window and one of only three permanent signings. No sporting impact is yet observable: he was named unavailable by the club for the 25 July friendly and reported absent again on 31 July, and the provider records an ongoing hamstring injury from 3 July 2026 with a null end date. Whether he is available on 8 August is an explicit unknown — the provider corroborates why he missed the friendlies, not when he returns.
  • Lequincio Zeefuik from AZLoan in · Confirmed by the club · Eligibility not establishedStriker (21), one-season loan from AZ, where he is contracted to mid-2029. Joined AZ from FC Volendam in February 2024; 24 AZ senior appearances; previous loans at oh Leuven and Heracles Almelo, where he scored 2 in six months. The Strongest-sourced Arrival Of The Window — the only one with two independent official primaries (AZ published its own release; Fortuna published one too, surfaced but not opened by the research pass).Immediate and observable: started all four retrieved friendlies, scored at 3' v krc Genk and hit the crossbar v FC Metz. One of the three loaned attackers on whom the entire rebuilt forward line depends — see hyp-rented-attack.
  • Siebe Wylin from Club nxt (Club Brugge)Free transfer · Confirmed by the club · Eligibility not establishedStarted the final friendly v APOEL and was substituted at 66', entering the xi as Peterson dropped to the bench — the one late selection change of pre-season, and one of the two genuinely open slots in the likely xi. Critically, he does not close the centre-back gap: L1 reports the club had been actively searching for a defender to a specific profile after Adewoye's departure left a central-defensive gap, and the defender signed is a right-sided one. That tension is preserved, not resolved — see hyp-unreplaced-centre-back.
  • Ole Romeny from Oxford UnitedLoan in · Confirmed by the club · Eligibility not establishedForward (26), loan for 2026/27; no purchase option is stated by the club. Previously NEC, Willem II, FC Emmen and FC Utrecht before joining Oxford United in 2025. Mathijsen: "Ole is an attacking reinforcement I know well from earlier collaboration." An indonesia international, which adds a FIFA-clearance dimension to the already-unconfirmed registration question. The fastest integration of any signing and an already-observed impact rather than a projected one: he started every friendly since arriving — three of three — and scored v APOEL. This is also the single strongest piece of contradicting evidence against hyp-rented-attack.
  • Shiloh 't Zand from FeyenoordLoan in · Confirmed by the club · Eligibility not establishedMidfielder (23), loan for 2026/27 from Feyenoord with a purchase option — the only arrival of the window carrying one. Shirt 22, club-confirmed. Feyenoord academy; previous loans at FC Dordrecht and Heracles Almelo. No announcedAt is recorded: the club page was not opened directly and only a mid-July 2026 window is established, so the exact date is left unknown rather than guessed, and observedAt carries this card's own observation timestamp instead.Bench role so far: came on at 46' v FC Metz and 79' v APOEL, no start in any retrieved friendly. A live candidate for the contested midfield slot, particularly while Simons and Michut are unavailable.
  • Nick de Groot from FC Den BoschPermanent transfer · Confirmed by the club · Eligibility not establishedLeft back (24), permanent on a multi-year deal, shirt 15 (club-confirmed, and absent from the provider snapshot). Debut for FC Den Bosch in 2021, 100+ professional appearances. Mathijsen: "Nick is a player who fits well within our playing style. He has the right mentality to develop further." Counterparty-official confirmation exists at fcdenbosch.nl — surfaced, not opened.Bench in three friendlies, on at 83' v APOEL. No start yet, and the left-sided slot is occupied in selection terms by Dahlhaus, whom the club's own squad page groups as a midfielder — a positional contradiction preserved elsewhere in this card rather than resolved here.
  • Anthony Descotte from Sporting CharleroiLoan in · Confirmed by the club · Eligibility not establishedStriker (22), loan for 2026/27; no purchase option stated. Shirt 9, club-confirmed and absent from the provider snapshot. Anderlecht academy then Charleroi, via Jong FC Utrecht, FC Utrecht and FC Volendam; 35 Eredivisie appearances with 7 goals; Belgium U21. Mathijsen: "Anthony brings qualities we wanted to add to our squad. He provides competition up front." Announced eighteen Days before matchweek 1 — the tightest eligibility window of the seven arrivals.Substitute appearances only so far (46' v FC Metz, 66' v APOEL); no start. The third and last of the three loaned attackers, and the one with the most Eredivisie experience of the three — 7 goals in 35 appearances, which is still well below the 12-goal season Sierhuis's departure removed.
  • Mohamed IhattarenOption exercised · Reported, not yet confirmed · Eligibility not establishedRetains the squad's principal creative player — and simultaneously creates the card's single most consequential open item, because the player has publicly stated an intention to leave and the window remains open past matchweek 1. See oq-ihattaren-transfer.

Out

  • Kaj Sierhuis to NEC (reported, contradicted — see expectedRole)Contract expired · Reported, not yet confirmedThe single largest confirmed sporting loss of the summer. Twelve goals removed from a team that scored 49, with no permanent replacement signed anywhere in the window — the three incoming attackers are all loans with a combined recent Eredivisie return well below that. He also scored Fortuna's goal in the 17 January 2026 home meeting with PSV, assisted by Limnios, who has also left; that is precisely why the head-to-head record is carried as context and never as a Fortuna capability.
  • Dimitrios Limnios to Panathinaikos (loan return); subsequently APOEL NicosiaReturned from loan · Confirmed by the clubRemoves the squad's leading assist provider of 2025/26 alongside its leading scorer. He assisted the Fortuna goal in the January 2026 meeting with PSV.
  • Neraysho Kasanwirjo to FeyenoordReturned from loan · Reported, not yet confirmed
  • Lance Duijvestijn to Sparta RotterdamReturned from loan · Reported, not yet confirmed
  • Shawn AdewoyeContract expired · Reported, not yet confirmedThe departure that created the squad's one publicly acknowledged unfilled need: L1 reports that his exit left a central-defensive gap the club aims to fill, and Mathijsen is reported to have searched for a defender to a specific profile. The defender actually signed (Wylin) is right-sided, and no centre-back arrival is confirmed as of the evidence cutoff — see hyp-unreplaced-centre-back.

The coach

  • Danny Buijs (42) is head coach for 2026/27 — no coaching change. He was appointed on 9 June 2023 on an initial two-season deal and extended through June 2027, so this is his fourth season and his final contracted year. He is named as manager in the club's own pre-season programme and in every 2026 match report retrieved, which is direct, dated confirmation that he is in post at the evidence cutoff.

Pre-season

These five friendlies are evidence of current Personnel, selection Preference, debuts and fitness Only — never league-form evidence for 2026/27, and specifically never a predictor for the matchweek-1 fixture at PSV. Six compounding reasons keep the results themselves out of any matchup claim: (1) the opposition levels are wildly uneven, spanning a Belgian second-tier side, a Jupiler Pro League side missing several internationals, the Cypriot record champions, a Greek Champions-League-level side and a club relegated from Ligue 1; (2) both defeats came against the only two opponents plausibly above Fortuna's level, so the record encodes opposition strength more than team quality; (3) three of the five preceded the arrival of at least one signing (Wylin 10 Jul, Romeny 11 Jul, 't Zand mid-Jul, De Groot 15 Jul, Descotte 21 Jul), so the team that played them is not the team that starts on 8 August; (4) no minutes data exists for any fixture except the APOEL substitution log, so nothing can be said about workload, fitness ramp, or how long any player can go; (5) one match was played in three 30-minute blocks with a heat-shifted kickoff, i.e. not even a normal 90; (6) three players were unavailable for the last two, so the most recent XIs are not full-strength selections either. The one genuinely usable tactical thread — starting well, leading or creating early, then conceding in the phase where the opponent raises intensity, twice from transitions specifically — is carried as a hypothesis (hyp-concede-after-leading) at low confidence, explicitly labelled a five-friendly sample, and is never stated as a property of Fortuna's system.

  • Selection Trend — the strongest structural evidence in this card. Eight names started all four retrieved friendlies unchanged: Branderhorst, Van Ottele, Dahlhaus, Pinto, Brittijn, Zeefuik, Hubner and Ihattaren. Every one of the eight played Eredivisie football in 2025/26, seven of them for Fortuna (Zeefuik at Heracles Almelo). Romeny then started every friendly since arriving on 11 July. Oukili replaced Gbemou in the xi from 25 July onward and Gbemou subsequently disappeared from the APOEL bench too — cause not established, and no injury is inferred. Peterson started the first three and was benched for the last, with Wylin coming in. This evidences selection preference only, not quality and not league form. Our reading of the evidence · Moderate confidence
  • Goal Distribution: 7 goals from 6 different scorers across five friendlies (7 scored, 8 conceded) — no dominant source of goals. Hubner 2 (Lierse 20'; Metz, before half-time), Zeefuik 1 (Genk 3'), Ihattaren 1 (Genk 45'), Oukili 1 (Olympiacos ~54'), Brittijn 1 (APOEL ~5'), Romeny 1 (APOEL). A centre-back Is The Joint-top Pre-season Scorer — the goals are confirmed; what that means is held at low confidence, because no source describes either Hubner goal as a set-piece.Our reading of the evidence · Moderate confidence
  • The Result Asymmetry That Actually Matters: Fortuna beat a Belgian second-tier side, a Jupiler Pro League side missing several internationals, and the Cypriot record champions — and lost to the only Two opponents plausibly above their level (Olympiacos, FC Metz) by identical two-goal margins, conceding three in each. This is not a form line and must never be used as one; it is a statement about which opposition level the wins and defeats came against. Our reading of the evidence · Moderate confidence
  • No Club Injury Bulletin was published in any of the five friendlies' coverage, and no injury was reported by name with a stated diagnosis anywhere. Three players (Simons, Michut, Márquez) were named unavailable for the last two friendlies with No Reason Given By Any Source — the reason only became visible through the separate provider sidelined pass. Absence of injury reporting across five match reports is not a clean bill of health for anyone else.Moderate confidence
  • Preparation Context: first training Sunday 21 June 2026 at 11:00 at the Buchten complex, followed by a domestic training camp at the R.K.S.V. Wittenhorst complex in Horst, Limburg, in the final week-and-a-half before the season — Buijs's stated reason being to let new signings integrate. That timing is late compared with Excelsior's 20-25 July camp, and it means the camp overlapped the arrival window of three of the seven signings.Moderate confidence

How they play

  • The competitive opener (PSV away, 8 August 2026) is read as a back three / wing-back structure, described in the finalized learning assessment as formation-verified-leaning across two convergent readings — genuinely stronger corroboration than the pre-season 4-2-3-1 reading profile.preferredStructure carries, which rested on a single grouped club report whose own formatting could not be verified. The tension between the two readings is disclosed rather than resolved: one competitive match, however well-corroborated, is not treated here as settling a structural identity this card has otherwise never been able to state with confidence, and preferredStructure is left untouched pending a second competitive data point.Moderate confidence

Players who matter most

  • Ivo Pinto is reported as club captain, on a single approved-editorial source (L1's first-training report, which names 'captain Ivo Pinto' among those present). No club captaincy announcement was found and no club-published lineup marks a captain, so this is never stated as a confirmed appointment. Pinto also started all four retrieved pre-season friendlies on the right of the defence.Limited confidence

What they do well

  • An unusually settled spine for a club that lost this much. Eight players started all four retrieved pre-season friendlies unchanged — Branderhorst, Van Ottele, Dahlhaus, Pinto, Brittijn, Zeefuik, Hubner and Ihattaren — and every one of the eight played Eredivisie football in 2025/26, seven of them for Fortuna. Six of the eight also featured in the final league match of 2025/26. Ole Romeny then started every friendly since arriving on 11 July, three of three, the fastest integration of any signing. That is nine settled names before matchweek 1, drawn from four separate club-published lineups. Our reading of the evidence · Moderate confidence
  • Settled, uncontested goalkeeping — a direct contrast both to Excelsior's unresolved hierarchy and to Fortuna's own 2025/26 position, when a Branderhorst injury was serious enough that the club signed Nick Marsman in February purely as cover. Mattijs Branderhorst started all four retrieved friendlies and made key saves against APOEL; Luuk Koopmans was on every retrieved bench. The 2025/26 injury is resolved on the evidence, and no current issue is reported for either. Our reading of the evidence · Moderate confidence
  • Fast starts are a repeated, source-supported feature of pre-season: Fortuna scored inside 3 minutes v krc Genk and inside 5 minutes v APOEL, and led or created the first clear chances in four of five friendlies per the club's own reports. This must not be extended into a claim about competitive matches — the sample is five friendlies against markedly uneven opposition (see preSeason.evidentialWeightNote), and it is recorded here as a pre-season pattern, not a team trait. Our reading of the evidence · Moderate confidence

Where they can be got at

  • Fortuna conceded 63 goals in 2025/26, the third-highest total in the division — only Heracles Almelo (85) and PEC Zwolle (71) conceded more. This is the single hardest number in the card about how this team defends over a full season, and it is corroborated: a specialist outlet independently characterised the defence as having conceded more than all but two Eredivisie clubs, which matches the table exactly.
  • Centre-back is the squad's thinnest position and its one publicly acknowledged unfilled need — a rare case where the club itself has stated the gap. Shawn Adewoye left on a free; L1 reports the club aims to fill the resulting central-defensive gap; Mathijsen is reported to have searched for a defender matching a specific profile, and the defender he signed (Siebe Wylin) is a right-sided one. As of the evidence cutoff no centre-back arrival is confirmed. Retrieved lineups show exactly two recognised centre-backs, Hubner and Van Ottele, starting every friendly, with the third squad-listed centre-back, Iván Márquez, unavailable for the last two and now carrying a provider-recorded ongoing injury with no end date. Our reading of the evidence · Moderate confidence
  • The entire attacking rebuild is on loan, and it replaces substantially more output than it demonstrably brings. Four of the seven arrivals are loans and all Three new attackers are loans — Zeefuik (AZ), Romeny (Oxford United), Descotte (Sporting Charleroi). Departed: Sierhuis (12 goals, the 2025/26 top scorer), Limnios (2 goals, 8 assists) and Duijvestijn (3 goals, 2 assists in 15 appearances). Arrived: Zeefuik with 2 goals in six months at Heracles, Descotte with 7 goals in 35 Eredivisie appearances, Romeny with no 2025/26 Eredivisie record at all. Contradiction Preserved, not Smoothed: the club and its technical director publicly framed the summer as adding attacking competition and a profile-fit defender, while the confirmed net effect on the attack is the loss of 17 goals and 10 assists of 2025/26 output replaced by three loanees with a combined recent Eredivisie return well below that. The club's framing is a club statement; the arithmetic is derived from source reports. Both belong here. Our reading of the evidence · Moderate confidence
  • Fortuna conceded three goals in each of the only two friendlies against opponents plausibly above their level, and the mechanisms in both are specific rather than generic. Against Olympiacos: two goals in three minutes (21', 24') after an encouraging start, plus a penalty. Against FC Metz: a counter-attack goal directly from fortuna'S own Corner, a second after defensive miscommunication, and a third from a penalty conceded by Dahlhaus. Read alongside the krc Genk report — where Fortuna led 2-0 and then 'retreated somewhat', allowing Genk more of the ball in Fortuna's half — the recurring shape across three of the five friendlies is: start well, lead or create early, then concede in the phase where the opponent raises intensity, twice from transitions specifically. This is a five-friendly sample, not a form line and not a claim about Fortuna's system — but it is the most transferable observation available ahead of an away fixture at the reigning champions. Our reading of the evidence · Moderate confidence
  • Head-to-head context for the matchweek-1 opponent, recorded as context and never as a predictive claim: in the 17 January 2026 home meeting Fortuna lost 1-2 to PSV, with PSV holding 69% possession, 18 shots (8 on target) to Fortuna's 6 (1 on target), 14 corners to 4, and 555 completed passes to 195. Fortuna's goal came from Sierhuis, assisted by Limnios — both Since Departed, which is exactly why this is not carried forward as a Fortuna capability. The 31 October 2025 reverse fixture is deliberately not stated in this card: its only carrier was ESPN, which this authoring pass verified is not in SourceRegistry despite the research dossier listing it as approved.Moderate confidence
  • Off-field financial strain within the last calendar year is real and sourced, but its figures are not. The club terminated its main-sponsor agreement in December 2025 after the sponsor failed to meet payment obligations; L1 independently ran the sponsor story, and Buijs himself referenced financial complications from sponsorship issues in his end-of-season interview. The reported shortfall, negative-equity and annual-loss figures came from carriers that are not in SourceRegistry and are deliberately not stated anywhere in this card — the existence of a main-sponsor collapse with budgetary consequences is what the evidence supports, and no more.Limited confidence
  • Squad depth is thin enough that academy-adjacent names carried real pre-season load: Ediz Büyükhan started against krc Genk, and Van Burgsteden, Bah, Laoukili, Johnson and Reitmaier occupied bench places in the two biggest friendlies. None appears on the club's own squad page or in the provider snapshot. Held at low confidence deliberately — this may equally reflect ordinary pre-season squad management rather than depth, and no source characterises it either way.Our reading of the evidence · Limited confidence

What we think happens

Each reading is shown with the evidence for it and the evidence against it. Where those pull in different directions, that is the honest state of the picture.

Fortuna's entire 2026/27 forward line is rented. All three new attackers (Zeefuik, Romeny, Descotte) are loans, and four of the seven arrivals overall are loans, replacing 17 goals and 10 assists of departed 2025/26 output with three players whose combined recent Eredivisie return is well below that. If this matters, it should show as a lower and slower goal return in the opening weeks than Fortuna's 49 goals in 2025/26 would imply — and as a squad-construction posture materially different from Excelsior's (ten arrivals, eight of them permanent).

Moderate confidence

Evidence for

  • All three new attackers are loans: Zeefuik from AZ, Romeny from Oxford United, Descotte from Sporting Charleroi (club and counterparty-official releases).
  • Departed output: Sierhuis 12 goals, Limnios 2 goals and 8 assists, Duijvestijn 3 goals and 2 assists in 15 appearances.
  • Incoming recent record: Zeefuik 2 goals in six months at Heracles Almelo, Descotte 7 goals in 35 Eredivisie appearances, Romeny no 2025/26 Eredivisie record at all.
  • No permanent replacement for the departed goal volume was signed anywhere in the window.

Evidence against

  • Romeny integrated immediately — he started every friendly since arriving on 11 July, three of three, the fastest integration of any signing, and scored against APOEL.
  • Zeefuik scored against krc Genk and hit the crossbar against FC Metz; the pre-season goal spread was even, with 7 goals from 6 different scorers and no dependence on a single source.
  • A loan is not by itself a quality signal — Zeefuik is contracted at AZ to mid-2029 and Descotte has genuine Eredivisie minutes.

Fortuna enter the season with a centre-back gap the club itself signalled and did not fill. Adewoye's departure left exactly two recognised centre-backs starting every retrieved friendly; the club publicly wanted a defender to a specific profile and signed a right-sided one instead; and the third squad-listed centre-back now carries a provider-recorded ongoing injury with no end date. If this matters, it should show as either a late centre-back signing before the window closes, or as an out-of-position central-defensive solution under pressure.

Moderate confidence

Evidence for

  • Shawn Adewoye's contract expired and L1 reports the club aims to fill the resulting central-defensive gap.
  • Mathijsen is reported to have searched for a defender matching specific criteria; the defender signed, Siebe Wylin, is described by both club and L1 as a right-sided defender.
  • Only Hubner and Van Ottele start at centre-back in every retrieved friendly lineup.
  • Iván Márquez was named unavailable for both late friendlies and the provider records an ongoing 'Unknown Injury' from 5 July with no end date.

Evidence against

  • Hubner and Van Ottele started every friendly together with no reported issue between them, and Hubner scored twice.
  • Van Ottele is a recognised central defender who can cover centrally, so the pairing itself is not improvised.
  • The transfer window remains open past matchweek 1, so the gap is not yet final.

Squad and club news

  • Dimitrios Limnios (2 goals, 8 assists in 2025/26) returned from loan to Panathinaikos and subsequently joined APOEL Nicosia — confirmed by Fortuna's own liveblog, which notes he faced his former club in the 31 July friendly.
  • Kaj Sierhuis, Fortuna's 2025/26 top scorer with 12 goals, left on a free when his contract expired. His destination is contradicted between sources and is not resolved here — see transfers[trf-out-sierhuis]. The material fact for FairEleven's purposes, that the top scorer left for nothing, is independently confirmed by both competing accounts.
  • Provider data records an active, ongoing injury for each of Sven Simons (hamstring, from 3 July 2026, 6 games missed), Édouard Michut ('Unknown Injury', from 5 July 2026, 5 games missed) and Iván Márquez ('Unknown Injury', from 5 July 2026, 5 games missed), all with a null end date. This corroborates — it does not replace — the club's own statement that the same three were unavailable for the 25 and 31 July friendlies with no reason given. No return date exists in any source, so this establishes nothing about 8 August.
  • Provider data records a knee injury for goalkeeper Ramazan Bayram open since 13 February 2025, with 56 games missed and no end date. This resolves what was previously a bare unknown — a player present in the provider squad list and in no club publication of any kind — into a documented long-term absence that predates the entire research window.
  • Danny Buijs extended his contract through June 2027 — no coaching change into 2026/27, his fourth season, and his final contracted year.
  • Fortuna closed 2025/26 with a 2-0 away defeat at FC Utrecht on 17 May 2026, finishing 11th on 39 points. Four of that day's starting xi and one bench player have since left the club.
  • Fortuna exercised Mohamed Ihattaren's contract option, extending him to mid-2027, announced alongside notice being served on five other contracts. Corroborated by Mathijsen's 29 July statement that Ihattaren remains under contract with the club.
  • Lequincio Zeefuik (21, striker) joined on a one-season loan from AZ, where he is contracted to mid-2029 — the only arrival of the window confirmed by two independent official primaries.
  • Anthony Descotte (22, striker) joined on loan for 2026/27 from Sporting Charleroi, shirt 9 — the last confirmed arrival of the window, announced eighteen days before matchweek 1, and the third loaned attacker of the summer.

Who is available

  • Reconciled Through Matchweek 1 and The 24-hour Check. Édouard Michut'S own Availability Is Resolved By Participation And Nothing More: v1 carried him among players the club named unavailable for two friendlies without Stating Any Reason, and he then came on at 61 minutes at PSV and scored the 90th-minute equaliser. That settles his matchday eligibility for that match; it says nothing about Simons or Márquez, who are reconciled separately, and nothing about his underlying fitness beyond 29 competitive minutes. IvÁN MÁrquez now carries a dated record with a projected return of 2026-08-22 — after the Cambuur fixture — so he is treated as unavailable for it; dated, not explained, since no diagnosis exists and the club's original silence is still unexplained. Kristoffer Peterson is new and appears in no earlier version: injured since 2026-08-07 with no projected return, recorded doubtful rather than out, because an open-ended record does not establish unavailability for a specific fixture. Sven Simons remains a long-term absence. Moussa Gbemou Is Unresolved And Is Not Resolved Here: he carried a provider record dated 2026-08-03 and does not appear on the registered editorial list checked at the 24-hour point, while others from that list do — an absence from a list is not a fitness attestation, and silence is not clearance. Ole Romeny scored Fortuna's first competitive goal of the season at 42 minutes, having started every retrieved friendly since arriving on 11 July; that is a participation and scoring fact, not a role reassignment, and no profile field is changed by it. No club injury bulletin or squad-availability list for the Cambuur fixture has been published.Moderate confidence
  • Fortuna Sittard's 2026/27 Eredivisie campaign is now underway: opened away at PSV (drew 2-2, 8 August 2026) and face SC Cambuur at home next, Saturday 15 August 2026. No European or cup commitment competes for training time between the two fixtures, unchanged from v1.
  • Playing eligibilityReported but unconfirmedAll seven summer arrivals (Simons, Zeefuik, Wylin, Romeny, 't Zand, De Groot, Descotte) are club-announced only — a club transfer announcement never establishes KNVB registration. Three are inbound from foreign clubs and carry unexamined international-clearance questions: Wylin (Club Brugge, Belgium), Romeny (Oxford United, England) and Descotte (Sporting Charleroi, Belgium); Romeny is additionally an indonesia international, adding a FIFA-clearance dimension. Descotte was announced just eighteen days before matchweek 1. No federation register was consulted, and none is publicly complete for Dutch professional football. The established players in the likely xi (Branderhorst, Pinto, Van Ottele, Hubner, Dahlhaus, Brittijn, Ihattaren) qualify on documented recent official match participation — the 17 May 2026 league fixture.
  • InjuriesConfirmed issueThe one check this gate materially advanced beyond Cambuur's and Excelsior's cards — and it is advanced only partly. The rule-9 primary control was run and returned six current, ongoing injury records for team 1459, none of them completed and none carrying an end date. Four resolve to names: Simons (hamstring, from 3 July 2026, 6 games missed), Michut ('Unknown Injury', from 5 July 2026, 5 games missed), Márquez ('Unknown Injury', from 5 July 2026, 5 games missed) and Bayram (knee, from 13 February 2025, 56 games missed). For Simons, Michut and Márquez this independently Corroborates what the club stated without explanation — that all three were unavailable for the 25 July friendly, with L1 reporting the same three absent on 31 July. It does not convert into a status for 8 August: no return date exists in either source, no club injury bulletin has been published, and 'Unknown Injury' is a genuine provider category meaning the diagnosis is undisclosed, not a placeholder to be filled in. Two further records could not be attributed to any name and are carried as explicit unknown identities. Gbemou remains an explicit unknown and is never conflated with injured. Every other player's status is unknown: absence of injury reporting across five match reports is not a clean bill of health.
  • Squad and transfer statusConfirmed issueSeven arrivals, all with dated club releases; one (Zeefuik) with independent counterparty-official confirmation from az.nl; one (De Groot) with counterparty-official confirmation available at fcdenbosch.nl (surfaced, not opened). An approved-editorial article of 21 July independently enumerates all six prior arrivals, corroborating that the list is complete through that date. Departures and non-renewals are established via approved-editorial reporting plus one club-liveblog confirmation (Limnios to APOEL). Named Gaps: Sierhuis's destination is contradicted between sources; Halilović's exit mechanism is contradicted three ways; Sinkgraven, Tunjić and Korkmazyürek are unconfirmed and deliberately not modelled as transfers at all; Wylin's own club release was never retrieved; the club's own squad page omits five of the seven arrivals; the Ihattaren situation is live and unresolved; and the Transfer Window Remains Open Past Matchweek 1, so this status is explicitly time-bounded.

What we still do not know

This profile records 29 points that available sources did not settle. The questions below are the ones that most affect how Fortuna Sittard are read; the rest are held open rather than filled in with assumptions.

  • Will Mohamed Ihattaren still be a Fortuna Sittard player on 8 August 2026, and will he be selected — given that he is contracted to mid-2027, started every retrieved pre-season friendly and scored, yet has publicly stated an intention to leave with no club having come forward eight days before matchweek 1?

He is the squad's principal retained creative player, and the transfer window remains open past matchweek 1. This is not a background note: the head coach has publicly discussed the conditions under which he should go, the technical director has publicly confirmed the absence of concrete interest, and either a departure or a distracted non-selection would materially change Fortuna's attacking shape at PSV.

  • Will Sven Simons, Édouard Michut and Iván Márquez be available on 8 August 2026, and what are their actual diagnoses and expected return dates?

All three carry a provider-recorded ongoing injury with a null End Date, corroborating the club's own unexplained statement that they were unavailable for both late friendlies. Márquez in particular is the third and only other squad-listed centre-back behind Hubner and Van Ottele, in the one position the club publicly wanted to reinforce and did not; Simons and Michut are two of the contested midfield candidates.

  • Is Fortuna Sittard's disciplinary position entering the 2026/27 Eredivisie season clear, and does a professional-section (betaald voetbal) card/suspension carry-over rule exist at all?

Directly determines matchday-squad availability. The rule-9 primary control was run and returned only injury-category rows with no history array, which is an absence of provider coverage rather than a clean position; and two independent research passes have now failed to locate a betaald-voetbal carry-over rule on knvb.nl, the only rule found being explicitly scoped to amateur football.

  • Are all seven confirmed 2026 summer arrivals registered and eligible for matchweek 1, including international clearance for the three foreign inbound players and the additional FIFA dimension created by Romeny being an Indonesia international?

A club transfer announcement never establishes KNVB registration. Three of the seven are inbound from foreign clubs, and Descotte was announced only eighteen days before matchweek 1 — and two of the seven (Romeny, Zeefuik) are in the likely xi.

  • Will Fortuna sign a centre-back before the transfer window closes, and if not, who partners or replaces Hubner and Van Ottele if either is unavailable?

This is the squad's thinnest position and its one publicly acknowledged unfilled need — a rare case where the club itself signalled the gap. Adewoye left, L1 reports the club aims to fill the resulting central-defensive gap, the defender actually signed is right-sided, and the third squad-listed centre-back carries an ongoing injury with no end date.

  • What is Moussa Gbemou's status? He started the first two friendlies, then appeared in neither the Metz xi, the APOEL Xi, nor the APOEL bench — and the club never named him among the unavailable.

He was a first-choice midfielder for the first half of pre-season and is now unaccounted for. Rotation, competition, an unreported issue and transfer activity are all consistent with the evidence, and the difference matters for midfield depth behind an already-thin group.

  • Who is Fortuna Sittard's club captain for 2026/27? Ivo Pinto is named "captain" by a single regional-broadcaster article and by nothing else.

No club captaincy announcement was found and no club-published lineup marks a captain. A leadership read on a squad that lost four of its final-matchday starters is worth more than a single passing mention can support.
